I have developed some observations and views regarding the characteristics of each age group which may affect quality of care and the overall doctor-patient relationship.
Younger doctors learn more quickly, a necessary attribute for absorbing today’s vast medical knowledge and developing good medical practice.
Older physicians have, however, attained more practical knowledge based on many years of experience. Also, in previous years medical education placed more emphasis on history, physical examination, and differential diagnosis.
Older doctors, therefore, tend to rely more on these tools, which they know to be less flawed or biased, than the manuals, medical texts, published research, and diagnostic studies, relied on more by younger doctors. Since using experiential knowledge and diagnostic skills requires more analysis, older doctors may be more thoughtful and deeply analytical in their approach to a problem and accept things less at face value.
Younger physicians may be more current and rely more on computer generated information, which may be fast and easily accessible, but often not as detailed. For example, an older doctor may obtain more information about the effects and side effects of a new medication even more quickly by scanning the written pages of the PDR, while his younger counterpart consults an abridged version on a smart phone.
However, older doctors who do not keep current by reading new written and online information, attending medical conferences, and teaching younger doctors become very rusty and incapable practitioners.
Younger physicians are better educated in the social and cultural aspects of the doctor-patient relationship, whereas older doctors may exhibit more overconfidence and arrogance, since these traits were more accepted, even expected, by patients in years past.
