Have you ever damaged a bone? Some breaks can be quite painful, but others may hurt less than a serious sprain. I’ve experienced both, and let me tell you I never want to go through that again. The event has focused my attention on avoiding injuries of any sort. It hurts worse than labor.

Unless you’ve gone into biology, medicine or anything of that nature, you may need a refresher on bones and bone care. Knowing what function the bones have and how to care for them is important, especially if you are in danger of osteoporosis.

1) Long Bones: The humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia and fibula are long bones, meaning that they are longer than they are wide. That translates to the upper and lower arm and the upper and lower leg. The radius and ulna are side by side in the forearm and the tibia and fibula are one in front of the other in the lower leg.

2) Short Bones: The bones in your wrists, hand, fingers, ankles, feet and toes are all short bones. They all have names, but there are a large number of them, so I will skip naming them.

3) Skull/head: At birth, the bones of the skull have not yet closed together. There are soft spots, called fontanels, which don’t totally grow together until the baby is around four months old. There are many bones in the face, both to aid speaking and chewing as well as protect your eyes and nose.

4) Vertebrae: These bones have more than one purpose. Not only do the allow us to bend, they protect the spinal cord. These are divided into three sections. The cervical spine is in the neck area, the thoracic runs the length of the chest, or thoracic part of your torso and the lumbar is the lower back.

5) Pelvis and Patella: This translates to your hip bones and your knee cap. The pelvis is one area that helps anthropologists differentiate between male and female skeletons. They can also find evidence to point out whether or not the female has had children.

So, what can go wrong with these bones? As we grow older, we run the risk of many different problems. As an example, children’s bones are not as likely to break. Instead, the bend, in what’s known as a green stick fracture. If an adult, whose bones now lack that elasticity had the same injury, the adult would probably have a broken bone.

1) Cracked Bones: A fracture can mean both a crack and a totally broken bone, depending on who you are speaking with, so I am using this term. A crack can occur when the trauma wasn’t strong enough to break the whole bone and also when a bone is under a lot of stress.

2) Broken Bones: There are several different ways you can break a bone. If you’re lucky, the bones stay in place and don’t need set. The bones can also move around under the skin or move around and poke out of the skin. You can guess that these latter are extremely painful.

3) Osteoporosis: Bones can become thin, especially as we age. This can lead to broken bones after even the most minor injury. Aside from age, lack of exercise, obesity, inadequate calcium intake and some illnesses can cause this condition.

Now that you have this knowledge, what can you do to avoid the problems? There are many things, though most of them are practical, common sense items. Adequate exercise, weight loss if needed and make sure to get enough calcium are things you can do on a daily basis. It’s also wise to use caution when doing things that could pose injuries. I could have avoided shattering my knee by simply looking where I was going.

It’s also a good idea to have your blood calcium levels checked. You may need more than just a glass of milk or an over the counter supplement. There are stronger, prescription medications that may be needed in some cases.

If you feel you are at risk for any of these or other problems with your bones, it is a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor. Trust your instincts, as they are usually right. Make sure to give a complete medical history as well as any medications/supplements you currently use. This will help the doctor find the right treatment methods for you.

When can a person suffer from a stroke? Well, a stroke can occur when a blood vessel is blocked in the brain. Usually, a blood clot is the culprit in blocking the vessel.

Since this is the case, it should come as no surprise that it prevents oxygen and blood from traveling to the brain and thus the health problem.

Also, another way in which this life changing health issue can take place is if there is hemorrhaging (bleeding) in the brain.

When a blockage or hemorrhaging takes place in the brain, the possibility of cells dying increases and this cause the parts of the body it controls to stop working correctly.

As we grow older and if we are not taking care of our bodies, the likelihood of suffering from an attack increases. However, there are several other risk factors that are involved in having an attack.

However, in this article, we will not be dealing with the risk factors that are associated with a stroke, instead, we will be dealing with the most common possible signs that a person may be about to suffer from a stroke and they are:

Headaches

Migraine suffers are familiar with severe pain in the head and if you are a suffer of this illness and one day you experience extremely pain, the likes of which you have never faced before, do not ignore it.

On the other hand, if you do not suffer from it and the same painful experience occurs, seek some professional help.

Vision Loss

Vision loss is usually a gradual process, therefore, if you suddenly loose sight in either or, both eyes, there is a possibility that you are about to suffer a stroke.

Fall

Due to the fact that your brain is not functioning as it should, if you suddenly looses control of your feet and stumbles or fall to the ground, in conjunction with any of the other signs listed here, as quickly as possible, you should get some help.

Weakness etc.

A moment of sudden weakness and, or a strange sensation on any part of your body, face, hands feet, etc. is an indication that all is not well.

Loss of Speech

If you experience a sudden loss of your speech, that is, one moment you are talking and the next you could not speak, no matter how hard you try to, this may be a sign of a stroke.

Additionally, if someone is speaking on the television or directly to you and suddenly, you cannot understand the words coming out of the person’s mouth, this is also another indication.

There are some foods, especially baked goods that contain high quantity of refined sugar, salt and flour. It is difficult to say which of these three ingredients considered the most damaging to our bodies or the most prevalent one. Several years ago, flour was stone-ground and lacked some of the original nutrients from the grain. A grain of wheat has a number of layers to it that contains necessary nutrients that are normally lost when being refined. This is the reason why several manufactures were mandated to add vitamins and nutrients after it was processed.

Nowadays, you will see on labels of flour-based products appears as “enriched” flour and list the nutrients that are being added. Currently, wheat is still stone-ground, however, grained-based food are being refined down to empty calories because of industrial age of mass produced goods.

Empty calories are the main concern in refined sugar, salt and flour against their natural counterparts. When grains, raw sugar cane and salt rock are processed down into a refined state, the calories are then void of any nutritional value.

When we eat empty calories, our body in reality has a difficulty digesting and breaking them down. They also burn much quicker than calories that are digested with ingredients complete with nutrients. This is the reason why sugary foods frequently give us high energy but lost quickly to cravings. For hundreds of years, we have lived on processed ingredients and the harm has been silent and the poison unfelt. Their effect is said to contribute to an increasing obesity problem and subsequent diseases.

We cannot afford to take risk on the harm caused by consuming refined sugar, salt and flour. However, we cannot escape from these ingredients because sugar, salt and flour are found in almost every food. Sugars and salts are naturally found in various foods like sugar in fruit or dairy and salt in meats and vegetables. The difference is that, naturally occurring salts and sugars have little quantity of healthy nutrients. Nature has actually provided most all we need to live well and much of the food we eat is the product of industrial convenience more than enriched nutrition.

The eye floaters are tiny dark specks that can be seen in your field of vision when you look at the blue sky, a white wall or any other uninterrupted light colored expanse and they are created when tiny clumps form in the clear, jelly like substance inside the eyeball and sometimes make dizziness in your head. These tiny floaters are suspended in this jelly, they move when your eyeball moves, as a result, if you try to look directly at them, they may be appear to disappear from sight and it can come in different sizes and shapes that sometimes make you get difficult to recognize what you should do with this symptom. Many people have not recognized it as the symptom in having the eye problem with their own eyes. When you have this kind of symptom, you have to immediately come to the doctor or you like to have a pediatric to solve you problem in it.

Floaters are suspended in the vitreous humour which means they move around and in your peripheral vision tend to go unnoticed, but sometimes, particles can cross in front of the central vision that you have. There is a simple Eye floaters cure that you can do if you have this kind of problem, you can try looking up and down, from side to side, to swish the vitreous humor and move the floater out of the way, so you can have the normal eyeball like before. However, if you still have some troubles in it, you should come to the professional doctor, ophthalmologist, or optometrist that you trust in order to make your eyes get back to the normal eyes like before.

Serious brain injury is a catastrophic condition that leaves the victim struggling to cope with life changing effects. However, they differ in that they affect life on multiple levels. Victims of brain injuries are not only physically affected but also psychologically scarred and often socially isolated. It affects the ability to think, to communicate and to connect with other people. For approximately 85% of sufferers, those problems eventually resolve themselves. But the remaining 15% of victims have lasting difficulties. A brain injury can introduce a frustrating amount of confusion and uncertainty into the victim’s life.

What is a brain injury?

Damage to the brain caused by an event or disorder such as a tumor, stroke, or traumatic injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is more specific as it implies trauma to the brain caused by an external force, such as a car crash, affecting the head and brain.

The effects of an injury to the brain can be wide ranging and depend on a number of factors such as the type, location and severity of injury. Every person’s injury is unique, so they will experience any number of the symptoms, which can range from mild to severe.

Help available to brain injury victims

Rehabilitation care is constantly being developed to help both those suffering from brain injury and their families adapt to a normal way of life. Teams of professionals are dedicated to the intensive case management, support for families, and involvement of voluntary and service organisations to help meet patient and family needs for services and assistance.

Due to the complexities of the brain, there are many possible consequences that can be sustained from a brain injury. Areas affected include speech and communication, physical ability, confusion, difficulty with thinking skills, memory loss, behavioral issues or inappropriate emotional responses. There are also less severe affects such as headaches, nausea, and changes to vision. A huge range of support and resources are now available to those suffering and their families.

There are medical professionals available to victims who are dedicated to the brain injury rehabilitation process, different areas of therapy are available depending on the individuals needs, these include speech, occupational, physical and educational therapy as well as general counseling for the sufferer and the families involved.

Specially designed programmes have been created by rehabilitation professionals to facilitate skill acquisition for victims. These are designed specifically to help them return to their community or work place and resume a normal rhythm of living.

Home evaluations are also available, which involves professionals assessing and providing the right modifications to homes and vehicles to providing victims with necessary independence.

As well as the physical and psychological support there is also financial assistance for those suffering with a brain injury. If the victim and their family are pursuing a compensation claim, there is always going to be some delay between when the injury occurred and when the final settlement can be achieved. To help minimise the impact of the timescale, interim payments are available for victims to help them pay for rehabilitation support, treatment or home modifications. Thanks to the help of dedicated professionals both in the legal and medical professions, brain injury victims can and do regain control over their lives.
