Walking around with a head full of white flakes is something no one wants. So what causes dandruff anyway? Bacterial overgrowth is one leading cause. Other causes of dandruff are overactive oil glands, nutritional deficiencies and even stress can cause or contribute to this condition. Most of us run to our local market and buy some harsh chemical that may indeed give temporary relief, but does little to truly remedy the root cause. So the next time dandruff shows up try using the following natural cures as well as the recommended preventative measures to get at the root of the problem.
- Goldenseal. A great herbal remedy. Berberine, an ingredient in goldenseal, is an antibacterial and anti-fungal and very useful against dandruff. Two teaspoons of chopped root should be added to a cup of hot water and then you let it steep for 30 minutes. Strain and add 4 drops of tea tree oil. Pour a little of this on your scalp and massage in and then a little more until you have thoroughly massaged into the entire scalp. Then leave it in for 30 minutes and rinse out.
- Essential Oils. Rosemary and Lemon essential oils are also very useful as one of you home remedies for dandruff. To us this remedy just mix a few drops of rosemary and lemon essential oils into a quarter cup of sesame oil. Massage this mixture into the scalp thoroughly. Leave for 30 minutes and rinse out.
- A preventative measure. It is still considered debatable whether consuming too much saturated fat can play a role in dandruff, but many believe that it can. It is highly recommend that you reduce the amount of saturated fats in your diet. Replace these with healthy fats such as those in olive and sesame oils.
